SAFER Hires Five Full-Time AmeriCorps Volunteers

NEW ORLEANS, LA: April 28, 2008

Student Advocacy for Equitable Recovery (SAFER), a New Orleans-based non-profit group, recently hired five full-time AmeriCorps volunteers. These volunteers, who are currently seniors at the University of Virginia, Sarah Lawrence College, James Madison University, and Tulane University, will begin working with SAFER in Fall 2008. They will sign a contract to work for 1700 hours over the course of ten months, and will receive living stipends and an educational award worth a total of $15,625. The newly hired volunteers are currently in the process of raising funds to help to pay for their living stipends and scholarships.

Founded by two Tulane University students in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, SAFER is a non-profit that coordinates student volunteers from around the country to rebuild New Orleans homes. SAFER is an officially recognized student organization at Tulane University, and operates from an office on the university campus. The non-profit’s current staff of seven full-time volunteers has led over 1,600 individual volunteers in recovery efforts throughout New Orleans, clearing flood debris from over 90 homes and rebuilding 15 additional homes.
